THE PSYCHOSOCIAL SUPPORT APPROACH
THE PROGRAM “UMWANA MWITEHO”
Curriculum program provided to parents raising children from birth to 3 years of age.
Parents are divided into five groups according to the child’s age, namely:
0–6 months, 6–12 months, 12–18 months, 18–24 months, and 24–36 months. Each group generally shares how they used the educational support materials provided.
A child’s brain develops by strengthening the capacities of its three main parts. These three parts are the “instinctive brain,” the “emotional brain,” and the “thinking brain.” Each part develops on its own and at its own time.
Every child grows, but he or she may develop well or poorly depending on the ability of those who care for the child. Using games or any other activities that keep the caregiver close to the child—talking to them, making them laugh, and playing with them—helps the child’s brain develop faster than that of a child who is not played with. Such a child may grow up feeling sadness and low self-esteem, which can also hinder their learning ability when they go to school.
